Final Idea - 'We found love'

We have decided that we are going to go with our second idea which was making a music video for the song 'We Found Love' by Rihanna feat. Calvin Harris we decided this because we felt when shooting the footage It may turn out rubbish and not have the effect we wanted so decided to go with our second idea. As Charlie was going on holiday to Dubai in the October half term. We thought it would be a good idea to get footage filmed over there since we wouldn't be able to get the same locations and setting over here in england. Also, as the song is an uptempo song we though it would suit the sunny scenery and nightlife over there. We both agreed that it would be good if Charlie shooted in locations such as, the pool, clubs, nighttime, buildings, motorway, and parks. We then thought in contrast to the sun in Dubai, to have footage also in England of the ‘boyfriend’. Showing that the female is in a better place now and she has left the boyfriend behind.

The story in relation to the lyrics:

'It's the way I’m feeling I just can't deny
But I've gotta let it go.'
This part of the lyrics shows that she is trying to escape her past, and her being where she is, is a better place, as she says she's 'gotta let it go'.

Love and life I will divide
This is another example showing that she has to think of herself and what is best for her.

Second video idea - Rhianna ft Calvin Harris

The story that we want to achieve within our music video includes a woman trying to escape love by being on holiday in Dubai. The video is about her having a good time without her ex boyfriend. Also the video will show memories of the ex boyfriend in England, on a miserable day which shows the contrast of good and bad. Showing she is in a good place now rather than where she was when she was with her ex boyfriend which clearly shows they weren’t good days through the contrast in weather.

Ellie Goulding

Album cover
Advert
This is Ellie Goulding's album cover and advert. It's obvious to say that the image is once again the main focus on the advert and it exactly the same as the album cover. Also it's similar to what Gwen Stefani has done, therefore this is a conventional theme.
This album is called 'light's' and the title has an luminous effect, which is a direct component of the title.
She is represented in a very casual and cool way as she is positioned looking down with her arm above her head. She doesn't have that much make up on whereas other pop/indie artists usually do, which creates a very laid back view of her. This could suggest that her music is more important than her appearance. Her hair is styled quite naturally which matches her make up reinforcing the importance of her music rather than her image. She is wearing a black top which is quite bland and it makes her look natural and plain as an artist, but due to this she appears to be unique as most pop artists dress glamourously and over the top. The camera shot is a close up of her as the main focus and her name is written as the masthead in a retro style font which stands out, underneath is the title of the album written in the same font. The fonts are very bright which reflects the title of the album. The colour scheme for this poster is quite natural with blacks, whites and vibrant yellows. The vibrant yellow text connotates the title of the album which is 'lights' due to them being yellow and bright. The masthead also stands out more due to its brightness. The artwork used in her hair also brings 'light' to the poster and reflects the connotations, it also attracts more attention to the artist as it adds more sophistication and glamour to the poster. Underneath the title of the album there are 3 positive reviews from websites and magazines which will help promote her album. Also at the bottom of the poster there is the institution (record label) and copyright information.

Magazine advert analysis

Album cover
Advert
The layout of this advert it very similar to the album cover. The image of the advert, seems to be the same one on the cover but cropped slightly. This works well though, since the colours and style match the artwork of the album. The texture is a paint type texture, which enhances the colours. I think the texture of the image is made to look as if it's made up, along with the crown and the chair, considering its clear that Gwen Stefani isn't the queen. The font is very suggestive, in that it's distinct to the artist and uses the same theme throughout. The colour of the writing matches the colour of the chair in which Gwen is sitting in. Also the border around the picture is the same colour. This draws an audiences attention to the image. The colours also indicate royalty as do the crown and stick she's holding. This is in my opinion is to promote the artist as a royal performance.

Paramore - RIOT

Paramore RIOT
This album cover looks as if it has been influenced by the name of the album; riot. The layout of the cover is as if its describing the name of the album. The word riot means a violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd, therefore the peace in this cover has been disturbed by the overload of the word riot. The use of the same colour throughout helps the only word in red stand out. The contrast in red and black work really well considering they are both bold colours.
From the design of this cover i think you can see what type of audience it could relate to, also the genre of music. The colours give and inside but also the name of the album could suggest it could be rock music. I don't think someone like adele would have her album cover like this because of the style of music she produces.

2nd Album, written at the age of 21
First Album, written at the age of 19
Both of these album covers relate to each other. The design of both covers are very similar, using the same style photography and emotion. They have both been done using portraiture photography, with almost the same expression. Adele's eyes are closed or she is looking down in both covers.
I would say this therefore relates to the artist and how she is portraying her music. Her music is obviously quite soft and has a deep meaning, which could also be personal.
When talking about conventions, the titles are very similar. The only difference is, is that the number next to her name are different, which is due to it being the age that she wrote each of the albums.
I think from picking up the album, you can see whether the music might appeal to you, considering the dark colours and shades in the images, which could be looked at as the music being quite personal.
Therefore her latest album relates to other promotional products of Adele's, one being her first album cover. Her second album cover has obviously been influenced by her first and it could be something she continues to do throughout her albums.

Analysing CD Covers

-Consist of either 4,6 or 8 panels.
-Should reflect/promote the artists music/image and create synergy. Also reflect the style of your music video.
-Relate to artist/type of music and target audience.
-Before creating your cover, analyse existing covers.

EXAMINE:
Design: layout/colour/style
Genre: artist/music and how does it relate? What does it tell us about the artist?
Conventions
Audience: who? How do you know? How does it appeal/relate to audience.
How does it promote the artist?
Does it show standardised conventions?
Does it relate to other products?

First Video Idea: Celine Dion 'My heart will go on'

After looking at many different types of songs we decided that it might be quite a good idea to make a humorous video, as they would be more enjoyable and light hearted, so we came up with the idea of doing a music video to Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On. The idea was that there's a women in a care home, or just ill at home, and she's watching Titanic. Then her carer/nurse comes in to give her drugs to make her feel better, but she takes to bigger dose and starts hallucinating as a side effect. This causes her to think she's dreaming and believe that she is apart of the Titanic/Celine Dion song. The video will focus on her out in the street being a Celine Dion character and her interaction with random people who have no idea what she's doing and their reactions. It ends with her passed out in the driveway of her home/care home and the nurse finding her there, wondering what she's doing and a mutual confusion between the both of them.

Mirrorball - Jonathon Glazer

One of the people in the video talks about how Jonathan tries to get a message across to the audience of his video, which I think is something I'd have to look into for my own video, as I may do a dark and meaningful video. He also mentioned that he talked to the artist, who he was shooting the video for, before he started shooting the video just so they were on the same wavelength and also by doing that it would get the best results for the video and make both the director and artist happy with the outcome. He also talks about how the music and video combine and how they seem like the same thing, which does come across, because both the video and song have a mellow tone which adds effect to the whole outcome. Also I noticed that the video seems to compliment the lyrics in the song. When the lyrics in the song would say "fade out again" the video would either fade out or go in slow motion, which I think is very clever and looks impressive.

LMFAO - Sexy and I Know it

The mood of this video is very humorous considering the lyrics and visual of the video. There is some kind of narrative throughout the video, which helps keep you interested. The narrative is primarily based around sexuality, showing quite a lot of sexual context, but it is shown in a humorous way. It wouldn't be considered as sexy.
Most artists that portray a voyeuristic manner are usually in female music videos. This could be to catch the attention of both sexes and more than one type of audience. However this music video isn't by a female artist, but the concept is very different. Still the video has been produced to capture both audience, one because of the voyeuristic behaviour but then the humour behind it can be aimed at both sexes and more than one type of audience.
This is an example that not only females portray voyeuristic behaviour, however when it is done male artists and female artists have to show it differently.

JLS - She makes me wanna

In terms of music characteristics, this video demonstrates clear genre characteristics considering the dance routines being performed throughout the video by all members of the pop band. There isn't a relationship as such when it comes to the lyrics and visual. There isn't a story being told, it is only really the dance routine which has similarities to the lyrics. Also there are close ups on the band members when they are singing which makes it clear to see the message behind what is being said.
There is more of a relationship with the music and visuals considering the song on a whole would probably be classed as a dance or uptempo, therefore when its the chorus, which is when the music is at it's peek you can see the band dancing and big crowds of people also dancing in the background.
There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment on the male body. One of the band members has his top off while singing his solo with his body greased.

Scouting for Girls - Analysed Genre

Scouting for Girls have portrayed a story throughout their music video. I would say their music characteristics are very similar to the likes of The Script which relate their music to a story. The whole of the music video you can see a relationship between the music and the visual, considering the styles of editing that had been used. For example their was a lot of slow motion when the 'geeky' character would run, which would be when the tempo of the music picks up. The editing used was mainly slow motion, with long camera shots of the characters facial expressions. When it's a verse the 'geeky' character would be in a different mood to when it's the chorus. It was as if, when the tempo picks up he would be happy.

The band was not shown in the entire music video, therefore it wouldn't be a case of selling the artist. The band is obviously not about close ups and voyeuristic behaviour. Therefore in my opinion its more about the selling the music rather than promoting the band. This shows that not all artists are about their image but are more concerned about how the public percieve their music.

Goodwin- Pop videos build on visual associations provided by the music.

Goodwin - GENRE

-Music videos can be considered as a genre as it relies on visuals and their impacts.
-Similar to adverts:
Standardised length, conventions of camerawork/editing, commercial product, seen by a mass audience.
- Nature of music videos audiences; teens and young adults. Distinguishes it from other genres.
-Provides us a different experience from viewing other programmes.

What is a music video?
A distinctive multi modal art form combining the audio and visual which can allow inventive creative opportunities.

-The demands of the record label will include the needs of lots of close up, of the artists. The artist may develop motifs which recur across their work.
-There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
-There is often intertextual reference. (films/videos/programmes)
